“Gaspar’s Ghosts”
Sueños Artist Series (11 of 12), 2026
Paper, Glue, Printer's Ink, Glass, Natural Cork, Fermented Grape JuiceGaspar de Portolá marched north from Point Loma in 1769. He was looking for Monterey Bay, but he walked right past it. The valley where Besio Vineyard is located—some 65 miles north of Portolá’s objective—still bears his name.
All that Gaspar really left behind were ghosts. Not his own, of course. They are the ghosts of the Ohlone, of soldiers and missionaries, of farmers and ranchers. And of one old man who planted vines on a hillside in 1980—land that has seen three centuries of Californians come, stay awhile, and then vanish. This piece captures but a few. Look closely, they might just look back.
“Gaspar’s Ghosts” is available for $100.
