“Gaspar’s Ghosts”
Sueños Artist Series (11 of 12), 2026
Paper, Glue, Printer's Ink, Glass, Natural Cork, Fermented Grape JuiceIn 1769, Gaspar de Portolá marched north from Point Loma, in search of Monterey Bay. He walked right past it. The valley where Besio Vineyard is located—some 65 miles north of the objective—still bears Portolá’s name.
What Gaspar really left behind were ghosts—though not his own. They are of the Chumash and Ohlone. Of the soldiers, ranchers and missionaries. And perhaps also the ghost of an old man who planted vines on a hillside in 1980—land that’s seen three centuries of Californians arrive, stay a while, and disappear. This piece captures the souls of but a few. Look closely; they may look back.
“Gaspar’s Ghosts” is available for $100.
